"Free is Killing Me!," says Matt Brown.

"Me To!," says Bryan.

Read Matt Brown's story at Sportsshooter.com, CLICK HERE.

Excerpt:
" I've had CBS.com, Wilson Sporting Goods Global Marketing, Fox Sports, ESPN.com, ABC, CBS, Fox, Rivals.com, Baseball America, college websites and yes, newspapers, magazines, all ask for FREE photos. Some are even willing to give me photo credit.

Wow! Give me photo credit for a photo I created! So these companies can take it and make money from a product I provided free. Yes, money. The bottom line here is money. Give me your photos for free and I can post them on their company website or run it in a publication... what a concept!" -Matt Brown

I know my stress level can get so bad over trying to make a living as a photographer my health is surly being affected. So this just might be killing me. I sometimes wish I had some other skill set to make ends meet, but I don't. I know photography and that's it. Oh and I can ride a mountain bike really well but not well enough for someone to pay me to do it. So I keep plugging along. Oh and I am always available for freelance work, but only if you will pay me!

MORE IMAGES FROM THE DEMF

Above is a bad video of the Girl Talk Show but I think it shows the craziness. Girl Talk, the DJ, is in the middle with only his boxxer shorts on. The flash you see going off in the upper left is mine. I had to shoot a bunch of arm held out, and over my head shots. I really wish I had my mono-pod to get a cool overhead shot with a remote switch on the camera.

CRAZY GIRL TALK SHOW AT DEMF

Ok so I photographed this CRAZY show at the Electronic Music Festival in Detroit last night, Girl Talk. I decided to shoot the group before, The Cool Kids, from in front of the stage instead of on or the side of the stage like the night before. I was there early enough to get in front and there were barricades about 3-4 feet out from the stage tonight. So a couple of us were shooting in there and it would be fine as long as the crowd wasn’t to crazy surging forward. It went well. Then you could feel the energy building before Girl Talk took the stage. Doug Coombe, a local music photog, warned me things got real crazy at a Chicago show. Anyway Girl Talk came out to check sound and all of a sudden a bunch of fans started to surge forward and jumped on stage. The weird thing was security let them for the most part. So I knew I would get squeezed against the stage or worse, crushed, if I didn’t move. I chickened out and got up on stage to try to shoot from there. Doug braved the crowed and stayed longer and it probably paid off because I’m sure he got some nice images when Girl Talk took the stage. I just don’t get paid enough to risk being crushed. So things were crazy and maybe borderline dangerous but the little security there was let things go on for the most part. A couple girls looked like they were being crushed in the front but things ended ok. (see photo below, girls in the middle) I was real concerned this one short girl would get crushed and this would turn into a news story. There was this guy behind her, I don’t know if they knew each other or not, but he was tall and put his arms around her to hold onto the stage and pushed back basically saving her from being crushed. I doubt she remembered I told her if things got real bad she could go under the stage to escape. This guy wins my Hero For The Night award! I never felt in danger up on the stage, just though we photogs would get kicked out. It was real hard to shoot and I hoped I capture the chaos. I tied to get closer to the artist and when I finally did I got pulled away by a security guard without getting a good shot off, oh well. I know this post seems rambling but I was up until 4:00 AM and am still real tired. But as you can see its being a photographer for a living is not just, “snap” take a picture.

THE ENERGY OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC

I photographed Moby performing a DJ set at the Movement '08 electronic music festival tonight, among other things, and I think it was the coolest concert I have ever seen. The power and energy of the music and crowd was amazing. I had earplugs in and my ears are not ringing but are still booming. Ok its 3:00 AM, I'm done sending photos to the News and I'm tired. I do it all again Sunday night. I will post many more photos soon.

I OPPOSE THE ORPHAN WORKS BILLS!!! pt2

Here is the, probably form, letter I received from my rep. It looks just like the letter others got.

Dear Mr. Mitchell :

Thank you for informing me of your opposition to H.R. 5889, the Orphan Works Act of 2008. Your thoughts on this important matter are most welcome and appreciated.

As you know, "orphan works" are copyrighted works whose owners are difficult or impossible to identify and/or locate. Specifically, "orphan works" are inaccessible because of the risk of punishment as a result of possible copyright infringement, if a copyright owner is ever located. Therefore, many works which have no apparent copyright are withheld from public view and circulation to avoid copyright infringement.

To allow these works to be viewed by the public, on April 24, 2008 Representative Howard Berman (CA) introduced H.R. 5889, the Orphan Works Act of 2008. If enacted, this legislation would limit the remedies given in a civil action related to an orphaned work if the individual accused of infringement of copyright can verify a documented search for the copyright owner occurred. Additionally, proof of filing a Notice of Use with the Register of Copyrights must be produced and compensation must be provided if the author's identity becomes known. Finally, this legislation directs the Register of Copyrights to advocate for the establishment of a database which would assist in the identification of authors of "orphan works" through gathering pictures of various works in such a database. Presently, this legislation awaits action on the House Judiciary Committee.

In the meantime, rest assured, your thoughts on this matter will be remembered during the 110 th Congress. Again, thank you for contacting me; and for all you do for our community and our country. Should you have any further comments or questions on this or any other issue, please contact me at the Livonia or Milford district, or Washington , D.C. office.

I work for you.

Sincerely,

Thaddeus G. McCotter
Member of Congress

Looks like not much support to me. This bill is just bad news!!!
Read more of what John Harrington has to say HERE. I don't always agree with John but he does his homework, knows his stff and is much better at writing and speaking then I will ever be.And I agree on this!

I OPPOSE THE ORPHAN WORKS BILLS!!!

Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work

There is an an online site for visual artists to e-mail their Senators and Representatives with one click. 2 minutes is all it takes to write Congress and protect your copyright:

http://capwiz.com/illustratorspartnership/home/

Go to John Harrington's Biz Blog for a ton of info:
http://photobusinessforum.blogspot.com/

GO HERE as well.

This Bill is just bad for photographers and if passed WILL take money out of my pocket. It will basically say that as a photographer I will not be able to control the use of images I take.

More info HERE.

Read the Bills:
S. 2913, the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008
H.R. 5889: The Orphan Works Act of 2008

Please write Congress if you oppose these bills.

Paparazzi for hire? Part 2

Ok so around the country, including here in Detroit you can hire your own Paparazzi to follow you around, be waiting for you when you arrive at a club, concert, wedding, anything. Sometimes people just seeing this spectacle will think these people are famous. So I photographed some photographers who work for a company here in Detroit for a story on this to run in the Detroit News. Kind of weird but maybe I should consider something like this for another form of revenue?? Maybe? Maybe not?

paparazzi for hire? More to come.

I shot and interesting and kind of weird assignment for the News tonight. It involved fake paparazzi. I will post about it and a couple photos after the story runs. Until then here are a few mountain bike images.
