ALL THAT JAZZ

I shot a different Jazz club Fri night, Sat night and tonight for the Detroit News. Including Baker's in Detroit which they say is the oldest jazz club in the world. I used some strobe mixed with available light for some of the images. The story runs in the News April 10th. Its about the jazz scene here in the Detroit area.

SICK AS A DOG

Ya know, I don't really know what that means but seem to use the phrase alot. Anyway I have had the flu for a week and it kicked my butt! Spent some days in bed and somedays working feeling just aweful! I shot a story about rescuing dogs and just wanted to crawl up and sleep. Plus I'm finishing taxes. Being sick and working on taxes stinks! Not feeling creative at all. But a freelancer has to keep working. I feel a little better today and know I should be back to normal soon. So the I will get back to posting.

LOOKING BACK - DENALI

I’ve been to Alaska twice, once in the early 90’s and once on my honeymoon in 94. I shot this image of Mt. McKinley or Denali as it’s also known while visiting Denali National Park on my honeymoon. The paper I worked for at the time gave me and assignment letter which secured us a photography permit and that allows you to drive a private vehicle down the one dirt road in the park. (Might be more the one now). On this day we were in the park for almost 30 hours and got this shot around 3:00 AM just before sunrise. The clouds dissipated around midnight, sunset, and the mountain was visible to sunrise. Then back behind the clouds which is the case most of the time. Wonder Lake is in the foreground. I hope I can take my kids to Alaska someday!

BLOWOUT

Ok so this post is a little late but every time I had a chance to post in the last few days I seemed to be having an issue with blogger. So I shot the Metro Times Hamtramck Blowout concert series again this past weekend, this time for the Detroit Free Press. Saw some good old Rock-n-Roll and a rock legend , Mitch Ryder. Also this weird but cool band/puppet show called The Gepetto Files. Check it out but view at your own risk. Not work friendly. For you strobist's out their can you tell which shots have off camera strobe used? When I used it the strobe was an off camera Vivtar 285HV with ebay triggers. I really need to get some pocket wizards but can't seem to come up with the extra Cash and I'm kind of holding out for the Radio Popper Jr's.

Oh ya, with all the music and nightlife assignments I've had the last year or so my kids wanted to be "rock stars" for some photos. So I set up a couple alien bees 400's and shot away, off camera of course. I just set the lights up quick to try and simulate concert lighting. No time for a backdrop to keep the clutter of my basement out so I made the lights quite hot do underexpose the background and then just burned down a couple of the areas I didn't have tome to gobo off.

This is what Chase wrote on his blog:

That's why I've decided to sponsor one person from this community to attend the ASMP Strictly Business 2 seminar in Chicago April 11-13 for FREE. What's that? You don't live in Chicago? No problem - got you covered. I'll even fly you there, round trip airfare from anywhere in the lower 48 States, and I'll put you up in the designated conference hotel for 3 nights. The whole enchilada"

SOME PRESS OF MY OWN

The Observer & Eccentric newspapers (covers metro Detroit burbs) did a story on my and shooting "Trash The Dress" portraits. It was published in their Wedding guide last Thursday. Here is the online version. GO TO STORY.
No photo online but the photos below ran in the print edition.
I've had a few inquiries already including a woman getting a divorce who wants to "trash the dress" for very different reasons then most of my clients. Hopefully it get the word out more and I will be posting more TTD images soon.

GIRLS,GIRLS,GIRLS

Ok so Getty Images hired me to shoot the opening of the Penthouse Club Detroit for Penthouse Magazine. There were allot of challenging issues to deal with on this shoot and I can't really post most of the photos for release, licensing and other obvious reasons. But besides the challenges and a very crowded club to try to move around and shoot in it reminds me that when someone asks what I do for a living no one ever says, "Jeez that must suck!"
I hired a friend of mine and amateur photographer to help with lights and some paperwork and he grabbed the shot below of me and Elle. Ya, we laughed about my hand gesture as well! LOL. Thanks Rick. Oh ya, I am a dork. I always say I'm to old to be cool. :)

One of the better shots I can show you.

An overall of the club.

OK ITS FRIDAY, WHERE WAS I? Hmmmmmmm?

I'll try to post more after I get some sleep but many I can't! I'll tell you where I was later. Getty Images hired me to shoot tonight for one of their clients.
